Mechanical Explosion of Hazardous Chemical Waste- Arizona

An employee of a hazardous chemical disposal company, was seriously injured when he attempted take a sample from a drum of hazardous chemical waste owned by an aerospace company. Basically, a 55-gallon drum of hazardous chemicals packed inside an 85-gallon overpack vigorously blew apart when the employee attempted to open the overpack.

The Chemaxx role was to determine the exact cause for the explosion as well as assess the degree of negligence on the part of the aerospace company and/or the hazardous waste employee. The chemicals involved were methylene chloride, formic acid, and soda ash.

The issues involved in the case included the aerospace company's procedures for handling hazardous waste, labeling, EPA Regulations, DOT Regulations, and OSHA Regulations. The case settled prior to trial.
